A Story About Garbage Trucks

Thought we would give a little behind the scenes info on our current bug hunting progress. Today we had another save come in for a stuck garbage truck - what was the cause this time? It was because of a thief who tried to find an optimal place to steal from that got very confused about where to look and would not stop looking...

To cut a long story short, it was because the job that assigns the staff tasks (such as "move this garbage bag) got stuck in a thread queue. This queue is what allows us to make expensive code run in the background. In the same queue there was what is effectively a "find steal target" job, which got endlessly stuck because it was forever searching the same sections of the map for an appropriate place to steal from.

We thought we'd share this story for two reasons:

1. Not all issues that look the same might have the same cause, giving the illusion that bugs are repeating themselves.
2. In a complex simulation game, downstream issues can cause all sorts of havoc and can take us a long time to debug.

Anyway, that's all for now. We thank all of you for your support!
