0.16.3.8 Update

Hello engineers!

This week's patch should add some much needed warning for when asteroids are depleted. We've also been working insanely hard on the multiplayer implementation this week and have a bunch to share!

Asteroids

Added a cracked/glowing effect to asteroids that have under 50,000 resources. Asteroids will progressively become more and more fissured until finally exploding when fully depleted. Many players (including myself) struggled with asteroids suddenly deplting with no warning, leading to death spirals. We think this change will ensure that players have enough warning. Check it out below!

Performance

• DRASTICALLY improved the speed at which games are loaded for larger save files

Note: the first time you load your save file starting with this version (assuming your save file was from an earlier version), the load process will be the same as before. However, when you save your file again, it will save it in a new format that allows it to be deserialized in a parallel fashion

• Improved some of the messages in the load process telling the user what's going on

Multiplayer Progress Update

This week we've made huge strides in the following areas:

• We have integrated the Steamworks API to use lobbies, allowing players to host and connect to games, just like other steam games! We have the barebones working so that players can hop into each other's save files!

• The refactor converting inserters and cargo drones to used fixed point to update their game state is basically complete at this point. Next week's patch should have the changes on the experimental branch. This refactor also fixes a number of race conditions and crashes related to inserters and should make the single player experience more stable!
