[p align="start"]Who is Mary Sears?
[p align="start"]Mary Sears was an American oceanographer who helped invent modern oceanography - and did it while quietly breaking a bunch of rules about who was “allowed” to do science.
[p align="start"]During World War II, she became a top expert for the U.S. Navy, figuring out tides, currents, and ocean conditions so ships and submarines could actually survive their missions.
[p align="start"]Mary helped build the systems, research programs, and scientific community that turned oceanography into a serious, coordinated field. That’s why she’s often called the “Mother of Modern Oceanography.”
[p align="start"]Oh, and she did all this in an era when women weren’t even supposed to be on ships.
