V8 Power Pack — Class Intro

Historic USV8 was Detroit warfare conducted with acid baths, homologation specials, and a fairly relaxed interpretation of the phrase “production based”. All governed by a rulebook that sometimes seemed more an invitation to creative interpretation than an exercise in enforcement.

In 2011, a new cost-controlled V8 class arrived in American road racing, built around a very different philosophy. The lesson from the old days was simple: control the variables, control the costs, and leave fewer places to hide an unfair advantage.

The formula centres on tightly controlled tube-frame chassis, approved constructors, controlled components and tightly managed performance. All designed to keep costs down and the racing close.

In Project Motor Racing, all three USV8 cars use the same naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 package restricted to around 500 horsepower and 657 lb-ft of torque, along with a four-speed H-pattern manual transmission with a quick-change rear diff, and strict limitations on suspension adjustability, brakes, and dampers to keep competition tight and team budgets affordable.

And in keeping with the spirit of American production-based road racing, the formula centres on three familiar silhouettes: Camaro, Mustang and Challenger—names that have been starting arguments in American households for decades.

The restricted formula has proven wildly successful. From its inception in 2011, the class has grown into one of the great success stories of contemporary US road racing, with huge fields of purpose-built muscle cars fighting across America’s most famous road courses.

The appeal isn’t difficult to understand either. Relatively simple, brutally fast and loud V8 race cars, tightly controlled performance, and three body styles carrying names already pre-loaded with 60 years of emotional baggage.

Camaro. Mustang. Challenger. Learn about these cars in this blog. It’s time to pick your argument.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro is arguably the natural centre of gravity of this particular argument: familiar sixth-generation shape on the outside, but underneath you’ll find a serious tube-frame race car with almost none of the showroom Camaro left to worry about.

The regulations deliberately keep the clever stuff (and engineers) at bay. No ABS. No traction control. No exotic carbon-fibre arms race. Brakes, dampers and other major components are tightly controlled, and even the amount of data teams can collect is restricted.

The Camaro’s job, then, is simple: give the driver a stable, predictable platform and let the V8 do the talking.

Brake later. Carry more speed. Get the power down earlier. Learn some racecraft. That’s your upgrade package.

2022 Dodge Challenger

The Challenger looks as if somebody drove a muscle car straight through the paddock gate and nobody had the courage to stop it.

Long, broad, unmistakably Challenger, and sitting over a purpose-built tube-frame chassis, it is less “road car with a roll cage” and more “race car wearing a very convincing costume”.

It looks huge. It sounds huge. And once that 6.2-litre V8 lights up, subtlety is not on tap.

2022 Ford Mustang

The Mustang takes everything that makes USV8 work and wraps it in one of America’s most recognisable shapes and brands.

Underneath the bodywork is a purpose-built tube-frame race car powered by the same 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 as its Camaro and Challenger rivals.

New Generation, Same Philosophy

To win in this class you need consistency, and know your car better than your opponents. Because in ths USV8 class the specs are all the same. It's up to you to make the most of it.

Camaro. Mustang. Challenger. Same engine. Old argument. It’s time to settle it all on the track.

The new generation of US Motorsport. Yours to experience in Project Motor Racing with the V8 Power Pack.
