The Master’s Hat
The Master had one other possession he never parted with: an old hat. Superstitious locals believed the puppeteer’s secret lay within it. Rumor had it that the hat granted the wishes of whoever wore it. Boys tried to swipe it, but always without success.
Then, one day, the performances stopped. The cart did not roll out into the square—neither the next day nor the week after. The children missed him, while the adults merely shrugged: "The old eccentric must have wandered off into the swamp." A month later, they finally decided to check on the Master at his home.
The puppeteer was sitting in his chair, but he was no longer breathing. The village elder picked up the hat from the chair, turned it over in his hands, and peered inside. There were no magic strings, no strange symbols. "Just an ordinary old hat," he said, tossing it into the corner.
In the morning, the locals returned to bury the Master, but the hat was gone from the hut. No one saw who took it. No one knows where it is now. Yet, sometimes, a black, hat-wearing silhouette is spotted in the swamp, trudging among the trees.
