Whirligig - v5.8004, Default build release. Major UI/backend updates

Hi Everyone

Well I've been leading up to this update for a couple of months now. This is a major UI/backend update with Steam Frame, Steam Deck and SteamOS work to get them running the best on those systems. No official support yet but I'm working on it.

Please be aware that the GPU video decoding isn't enabled in Proton or Lepton yet, so playback of high res videos will struggle at the moment.

Beyond that there are a stupid amount of changes. Because of the number of changes I'm going to put my open and closing statements at the top.

And finally

Firstly thanks for all your support. If you like Whirligig a positive review is always welcome and I very much appreciate feedback, suggestions and of cause bug reports :) Now, on with the show. Behold the stupid number of updates.....

[edit] Looking over the amount of updates, there is a possibility for new bugs. Please let me know if you come across any and if you need to return to the previous default it's this one whirligig_v5.7942

Highlights

Steam Frame

  • Whirligig now runs on the Steam Frame, either as the PC version through Proton or as a standalone version (using Lepton) installed from the same Steam library entry.

  • Recentring now works on the Frame.

  • Fixed the image being supersampled twice, which cost performance for no gain.

  • Your folders and downloads now point at your real home folder.

  • Steam Frame controllers are fully supported, with working grips, and they now draw in front of the menus.

Whirligig has a native Android build for Steam Frame that runs through Valve's Lepton compatibility layer. It runs better than the Windows version through Proton. To switch to it:

  1. Put on your Steam Frame and open your Library.

  2. Find Whirligig and select it to open its page.

  3. Select the gear icon (⚙) and choose Properties.

  4. Go to the Compatibility tab.

  5. Turn on Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.

  6. In the dropdown, choose Lepton.

  7. Close Properties. Steam will download the Android version of Whirligig. Wait for the download to finish.

  8. Press Play. Whirligig will now run as the native Android version.

[p align="start"]To switch back to the Windows version, go back to Properties → Compatibility and either select a Proton version or turn off the force option.

Steam Deck

  • Tapping the touchscreen now clicks where you tap.

  • Thumbstick panning works everywhere, including dome mode, with the correct up/down direction and a faster speed.

  • Your SD card and home folders (Videos, Pictures, Music and so on) show up in the browser, and Plex/Jellyfin downloads go to your Videos folder.

  • Fills the Deck's screen at native resolution with no black bars, and looks sharper.

  • Uses the VLC player, the most reliable one under Proton.

Subtitles, rebuilt

1 / 1 · 100%
  • Subtitles now sit on a single plane that works correctly in 3D on every video path.

  • Subtitles built into MKV and MP4 files (SRT, ASS and MP4 text) now work on every video path, not only VLC VideoLAN.

  • External subtitle files can be .srt, .ass, .ssa or .vtt.

  • Picture-based subtitles (PGS/VobSub, common on Blu-ray rips) are listed and play with the VLC player.

  • New "VLC VideoLAN" toggle if you prefer VLC's own subtitle rendering.

  • Four fonts, including the dyslexia-friendly OpenDyslexic, plus support for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Cyrillic text.

  • Outline and drop shadow, or a rounded background box, with a transparency slider and a live preview in the menu.

  • New subtitle delay setting: up to 10 seconds earlier or later in 100 ms steps, remembered for each video.

  • Subtitles no longer stretch when you stretch the video.

  • Much faster loading on large files (a 1.25 GB film went from 26 seconds to under 2), and subtitles are cached after the first load.

  • Clearer track names, such as "Forced" and "SDH", including for files opened over SMB.

Sharper menus

  • All the menu text has moved to a new text renderer, so it's crisper at any distance.

  • Removed the edge smoothing (SMAA) that was softening text.

Audio

1 / 1 · 100%
  • New "VLC 5.1 controls": VLC can now play through Whirligig's positional surround speakers, with a level meter for each speaker.

  • The .1 (LFE) channel now goes to your subwoofer on 5.1 and 7.1 systems.

  • New audio delay setting to fix lip sync: up to 1 second either way with VLC, and up to 1 second later with Media Foundation.

  • The audio-reactive backgrounds now react to any sound your PC plays, whichever video path you use, and have a sensitivity slider.

  • Audio-reactive scenes can now run together with an image background.

Network sources

1 / 1 · 100%

SMB

  • SMB now works on Linux and SteamOS (Steam Frame, Steam Deck) through Proton.

  • Add more than one server with "+ Add server", and remove them one at a time.

  • When a connection fails, Whirligig now tells you why (server not found, share not found, guest access blocked and so on) instead of always blaming the password.

  • You can include a share in the address, for example nas/Movies.

  • A server that isn't answering is reported in about 4 seconds instead of up to a minute.

DLNA

  • DLNA now works on Linux and SteamOS through Proton (it used to be switched off there).

Jellyfin and Emby

  • Quick Connect: sign in by approving a code from another Jellyfin app, with no password to type.

  • You can paste the server address straight from your web browser.

  • Works with servers that use https or redirect to another address.

  • Clearer messages for a wrong password, a server that can't be found, and an expired session.

Plex

  • Fixed remote playback through Plex's relay, which often failed on the first try.

  • Sign-in problems are now shown on screen.

All sources

  • A "Save report" button in each login and settings window saves a connection report to your Downloads folder, ready to send me. Names and public IP addresses are masked.

  • If a network video won't play, Whirligig tells you why.

  • Servers that aren't answering are marked "(offline)".

  • Download to device now works with every video path on PC, not just VLC, and is now available for DLNA and SMB too (SMB on Windows only). Turn it on in each source's settings.

  • Fixed some MP4 files saying "can't play" on their first download.

  • If you quit while watching a network video, Whirligig reopens it next time if the server is reachable, and otherwise opens the browser.

  • Server passwords and tokens are now hidden in Whirligig's log files.

File browser

  • Folders refresh by themselves: new or deleted files appear within a couple of seconds, and files that are still copying wait until they've finished.

  • Opening the browser no longer freezes for up to 30 seconds when a NAS drive is asleep.

  • Fixed switching between list and thumbnail view at the top level of a network source.

  • Files with the same name on network sources no longer hide each other.

Automatic projection detection

  • When it's on, Whirligig now reads the 360/180, fisheye and 3D information stored inside the file (Google and Apple spatial metadata, and MKV tags), not just the filename.

  • Better filename tag matching, with several fixes (_OverUnder, swapped-eye tags, _180).

  • Only applies the first time you open a file, so a format you've picked by hand is kept.

  • Apple spatial (MV-HEVC) videos show a message that they play in 2D.

  • It's still off by default.

VR menus

1 / 1 · 100%
  • New grab bar under the menus: point at it and hold the trigger to move the menus around you.

  • Hold Reset Orientation for a second to put the menus back.

  • New "Disable drag bar" toggle and "Reset UI position" button in Interface > Menu Options.

  • The alternative slider menu now moves with Glue UI, and the arrow keys adjust the selected slider.

  • With 6DoF turned off, the controllers now follow your head instead of freezing in place, and recentring no longer turns head movement back on by mistake.

New: Funscript support (experimental)

  • Whirligig can now play .funscript files to a connected device through Intiface Central, without a separate script player. Turn it on in Settings > Playback > Advanced, keep Intiface Central running, and give the script the same name as the video.

Languages

  • All 12 languages updated, including translations for all the new settings.

  • Changing language now updates open menus straight away.

Fixes

  • Scrubbing a paused video no longer starts it playing.

  • Barrel 360 no longer shows a black area behind you after you've changed the bend.

  • Opening a file by double-clicking it no longer offers to resume from the previous video's position.

  • Clearing a save slot now shows an empty slot instead of the "missing file" picture.

  • Playlists remember their scroll position, skip blank and heading lines, and no longer get forgotten.

  • Fixed a black screen when launching with some command-line options.

  • Steam no longer asks you to choose between "Whirligig" and "Whirligig None VR" when you launch.

  • Updated to Unity 6000.6.4f1 and AVPro Video 3.4.3.
