History Auto Cleaner

Automatically deletes battle logs, archived messages and letters, historical quests, and tales at set intervals. Includes configurable settings and manual clean-up options.

Battle Logs

(Default: On, Recommended)

Normally, Rimworld’s world pawn garbage collection removes unused pawns, but pawns referenced in a battle log are removed more slowly. Turning on this option forcibly deletes battle logs, allowing those pawns to be removed sooner. This is especially useful once your colony is huge and raids involve a hundred or more pawns. It made my world pawn list shrink by around 200 pawns and reduced my save file size from 46MB to 33MB.

Archived Letters & Messages

(Default: Off)

This option deletes archived letters and messages. It’s probably safe. But since the base game already purges old entries once you exceed around 200, the performance gain is negligible. On a 16 year old save, I saw no noticeable difference in file size, so it’s probably not worth enabling.

Historical Quests

(Default: Off)

After you’ve played for a long time, the historical section in the quests tab can get really long. Enabling this option removes all historical quests. In my 16 year old save, it reduced the save file size by about 0.7MB. During a two-hour test, everything still worked: the bestowing ceremony functioned correctly, and borrowed colonists were returned properly, though I can’t guarantee it’s completely safe. In any case, the performance gain is negligible.

Tales

(Default: Off)

Rimworld logs every little event as a tale (even your cows giving birth), so the tales list can grow significantly over time. Enabling this option deletes those entries but also strips out flavor text like art descriptions. I encountered no issues on my save, but you’ll lose all narrative flavor, and there’s also a risk of unintended side effects. The performance gain is minimal: it removed only about 20 world pawns and reduced the save file size by 0.6MB in a 16 year old save. But if you think it’s worth it, go ahead.
