30" FNC Assorted Boxcars (Limited Upload)

As of now I don’t quite have the time to upload all of the rolling stock I have been working on for Fjordlands Navigation Company, a fictional railroad to operate on Fjordlands, so I figured I would do a quick release of some of my favorite wagons thus far. This workshop post will be hidden once I have a more official upload situation.

All of these cars run on 3u and 3.5u track, although they were designed for 3.7u as it most closely matches 30in narrow gauge in my scale. All but the stockcar have working handbrakes, and the interior of the combine can be entered through various invisible seats. I'd also like to thank my good friend Grand Valley Productions for helping me troubleshoot the frame of FNC 45. That was supposed to be out a month ago, but there was an issue with the frame that needed a second mind to solve.

Each of these cars have rather oddball origins. FNC 45 at 27ft long and built in 1895 is constructed more like a passenger car than anything. Instead of carrying mail and passengers, this unconventional combine carries mail and produce with it’s large iced compartment. This car was inspired by a scratch-built O-Scale car from another fictional by the great rolling stock modeler Al Badham, Sebasticook & Moosehead’s Milk Car 870. Given the S&M is standard gauge, the only real consistency between the two cars is the shelves in the iced compartment

FNC 116 at 18ft long and built in 1887 was originally an all-wooden car, but was rebuilt in 1905 with all steel sides and roof. The frame still remains wooden, however.

FNC 118 at 18ft long and largely built in-house in 1895 was again built on the frame of an early car from the railroad’s founding. 118 and 117 were built for the transportation of sheep between various isolated pastures along the rail line. This flatcar-turned-stockcar was inspired by an 18ft wooden stockcar kit from Wiseman Model Services.

FNC 309 at only 12ft long and built in 1893 was originally a wooden side-dump ore hopper. As the railroad phased out it’s fast-deteriorating wooden hoppers, many of the frames were salvaged between 1910 and 1911 to build small cars of local agricultural traffic, such as the refrigerated 308 and 309. This car was inspired by a kit for a 14ft ventilated boxcar kit from Chivers Finelines.
