'Your stuff always works great, and from a technical point of view I love it. But why don't you make it look better?'
Well. That's not the first time I heard that question. The answer is: Because I find function much more interesting than form. And as great as Scrap Mechanic is, it's hard to build stuff that does both - work well and look good. Mainly because the technical stuff takes up so much room that it impacts the proportions and thus the ability to look good. I insist on using suspension struts (as opposed to bearing-based suspension, for example), which is a problem since it requires more height than I am usually willing to give.
I virtually never used the sport suspension after testing it out when I got the game initially, but with the 0.2.0 update I decided to give it another chance. I still wish I could have made this one with the off-road suspension (because American cars of that era had unbelievably soft suspension), which would actually be possible if you could fit a bearing directly onto them. But alas, you can't, so you gain one more block of height for a part you don't really need for anything. You also need at least 2 blocks of ground clearance if you want a car to be fun to drive (unless you go for a flat world), which makes things difficult, looks-wise, at least for anything not off-road :)
Did I mention I'm always building for the vanilla game? That might change when mods are downloadable from the workshop - we'll see. Depends on how it is implemented. I do prefer the challenge of working with a limited set instead of virtually unlimited possibilities, because it makes you think more, and it also entices the users to use their imagination more. It's the LEGO dilemma - those tons of special stuff are great, but LEGO was really more fun when there weren't so many special parts with their limited use. So I very much like Axolot's mindset regarding parts. Still, I do long for some blocks like inner and outer corners to connect the 45° blocks, for example.
Nevertheless, this time around I tried to make the vehicle look more pleasing without compromising anything. I think it worked out, mostly. You can see what the model originally looked like (before I was asked to make something a little more pleasing to the eye) in the last screenshot where both models (the original being more of a Baja race car, even using off-road suspension) are seen side by side.
It draws obvious inspiration from the 70's muscle cars (including the iconic red interior :-) and uses the lovely Big Block crafted by ArAX91 I recently fell in love with (the engine, not the user - he's done some other nice engines, take a look: the Biturbo is an absolute marvel), although I had to chop off the oil pan this time, unfortunatley.
The body rests on a heavy steel frame which was also one of the non-negotiable requirements. Additionally, it tries to capture the feeling of cramped space in the back of the car :D
Driving characteristics show gentle oversteering (due to power on the rear axle) as befits a pony car.
