The Timeline

Czechoslovakia was proclaimed on the Versailles Conference in 1919, by the decision of the Entente powers. It obtained the lands of Czechia, Slovakia, Sorbia and southern Silesia. Due to various events in the Polish-Bolshevik War Lemko and Komancha were integrated into Czechoslovakia. The country was reformed into Zapadoslavia in 1925.

The increasing feeling of inferiority among the minorities, who were hostile to various reforms made by Czechoslovak National Democratic Party’s governments, weakened the country in the late 1930s.

The Autonomist Blok, which was composed of various national parties, won the parliament elections in 1934. After this unprecedented victory the party of Czech radical nationalists (Český Štít) declared a war against the ‘treacherous government’ which led to escalation of street violence and unrest in countryside. The Autonomist Blok leaders asked Milan Rastislav Štefánik (he was the minister of war at the time) to restore the order.

Štefánik declared martial law, violently stopped the riots and imprisoned key Czech nationalists. After doing his job he promised that new free elections will happen in two years.
