*The Empire of the Rising Sun felt betrayed when Germany signed a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union behind Japan's back, at a time when Japan was engaged in fierce battles with the Soviets at Khalkhin Gol. Later, in the autumn of 1940, Japanese armed forces occupied Indochina, which was under the control of Vichy France, an ally of Germany, leading to a diplomatic crisis and an actual Japanese-German war. The United Kingdom could not reject Japan as an ally when the British Empire was on the verge of total collapse, and Germany was doing as it pleased in Europe.

The Japanese launched the attack on Pearl Harbor. As a result, the United States declared war on Japan and only Japan. Due to the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, the United States would certainly not join the war on the side of the British. Japan did not wage war against Great Britain and used all its strength against the USA, quickly capturing American possessions. The United States had been sending Lend-Lease support to all of Japan's enemies before the war began, which implies that the United States was also providing Lend-Lease support to Italy and Germany. The United Kingdom assured the USA that it would not conduct any hostile actions against the USA, however, the war was being fought on nearly all the seas of the world, and an incident was only a matter of time. On February 22, 1942, Winston Churchill declared war on the USA, hoping that the combined Japanese and British fleets would overcome the USA, forcing them to sign peace.*
