More than eighteen years have passed since the Great War that shattered the old hegemonies of Europe, yet the aftershocks of the global economic cataclysm still rage across every inch of this continent. It never ended with the crash of Wall Street; it merely endured in a new guise—transformed into deep fissures rending the dependent economic system, into surging popular resentment shattering the illusion of false peace, plunging this land, which fought a hundred years of bloody battles for independence and freedom, back into the abyss of turmoil and division. Under the banner of "America for the Americans", the United States of America treats the entire continent as its own private backyard. From the coral reefs of the Caribbean to the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, from the deserts of the US-Mexico border to the mouth of the Río de la Plata, the shadow of the Stars and Stripes is omnipresent. The bloodsucking vines of the United Fruit Company coil around every banana plantation in Central America, twisting sovereign nations into pliant "banana republics" at its mercy. Wall Street capital seizes control of mines, oil fields, and plantations, siphoning the wealth of this continent endlessly northward, leaving nothing but unending poverty and humiliation for the lands it leaves behind. To uphold this seemingly unshakable neocolonial order, the iron boots of dictators have crushed countless waves of protest. Prisons and execution grounds are filled with souls who fought for liberation, their cries drowned out by the hot winds of the sugarcane plantations, reduced to unheard whispers in the dark.

Yet this order, forged together by the northern hegemon and the local oligarchs, is ultimately nothing more than gilded rot, beautiful on the outside but rotten to the core.

Even as the politicians in Washington believe they have locked this backyard firmly in their grasp, the sparks of rebellion have already spread like wildfire across every corner of the continent. In Mexico, Lázaro Cárdenas holds aloft the banner of revolution, wielding the sharp blade of land reform and oil nationalization to sever the shackles of foreign capital bound to the nation, seeking to restore the century-betrayed revolutionary ideals to this land that once spilled its blood for independence. From the deep valleys of the Sierra Madre to the jungles of the Yucatán Peninsula, countless landless peasants have taken up their farming tools, and with them, their weapons. They seek to reclaim the land that is rightfully theirs, to make the vow of Tierra y Libertad—Land and Liberty—a living reality. Yet the backlash from conservatives and foreign capital has never ceased. Plots are quietly brewing in the depths of the National Palace in Mexico City, and vultures circle high above the halls of power, waiting for the moment to strike and tear this radical transformation to shreds.

Across the banks of the Río de la Plata, undercurrents of unrest roil just as fiercely. On the Pampas of Argentina, the great landowners and military oligarchs hold the reins of state power in an iron grip. The collapse of beef and grain exports brought by the Great Depression has plunged countless common people into the abyss of abject poverty, and the voices of radicals and nationalists grow louder with each passing day. The Axis powers in Berlin, exploiting resentment toward the northern hegemon, are quietly extending their influence here. The bayonets of the military have long been polished, waiting only for the order to shatter the fragile parliamentary democracy to dust. In Brazil, the regime of Getúlio Vargas balances precariously on the knife's edge between left and right. With policies of economic nationalism, he seeks to break free from a century of dependent fate, yet he must simultaneously face the surging tide of left-wing communist movements and the relentless advance of right-wing fascist Integralists. Beneath the bright sunshine of Rio de Janeiro, plots of assassination and coup d'état never cease. Amid the towering peaks of the Andes, the shadow of defeat still hangs heavy over Bolivia. The recently concluded Chaco War has dealt another devastating blow to a nation that had already lost its access to the sea. Tens of thousands of young men perished in the deserts of the Chaco, only to be met with the humiliation of territorial cessions, war reparations, and an economy on the brink of total collapse. The military's authority lies in tatters, left-wing uprisings break out one after another, and strikes by miners and highland workers never cease. This long-suffering nation stands on the precipice between revolution and ruin.

Even in Central America, held firmly in the grip of the United Fruit Company, the sparks of resistance have never been extinguished. In Guatemala, in Honduras, in El Salvador, the workers of the banana plantations and the landless peasants pit their flesh and blood against the machine guns of dictators and the exploitation of foreign capital. Their resistance may seem insignificant now, yet it will one day unleash a storm that will shake the entire continent to its core. And on the islands of the Caribbean, the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo is infamous for its bloodshed and terror. Across the lands of the Dominican Republic, the shadow of the secret police is omnipresent, and countless opponents vanish into the night. Yet the undercurrent of resistance flows silently, unceasing, through the darkness.

At the same time, the fires of war from the Old World are crossing the oceans, spreading toward this continent. The Axis powers of Berlin and Rome, under the guise of trade and aid, are extending their influence into Argentina, Chile, and Brazil. The cancer of fascism is quietly taking root, riding the wave of nationalist sentiment. The old colonial empires of London and Paris still cling to their last remaining colonies in the Caribbean and South America, seeking to salvage their fading hegemony on this continent. The flames of the Spanish Civil War have pushed the left and right wings of this continent into outright opposition. Countless young Latin Americans have traveled to the Iberian Peninsula to fight and bleed for their beliefs, and they will return bearing not only the lessons of revolution and civil war, but also a power capable of shaking the very foundations of the continent's order.

This continent, which fought and bled for independence and freedom, has been pushed to the crossroads of history. When the fires of war in Europa ignite in full, when the global storm sweeps across the world, will it break free from the century-old shackles of dependence, and finally fulfill the vow of unity and liberty sworn by San Martín and Bolívar? Or has the bell of damnation already tolled in silence, drowned out by the iron boots of dictators and the gunfire of capital?
