It is the 51st year of the Republic, 1962 by the Western calendar.

A single instrument of surrender has arrived from the Southwest, and the flames of war that had burned for years on end have at last been extinguished. The railways are no longer under martial law; the thunder of guns over the river has fallen silent. Shattered towns re-emerge from their outline in the winter fog. In the streets of Nanjing, voices cry out "Restoration!" and "Reunification!", as the sulfur-smoke of a bygone age had scattered on the wind . The Rising Sun flag now blankets the skies of East Asia; the new order of the Co-Prosperity Sphere has, at last, descended upon China.

22 years have passed. Those who once held secret talks in Hanoi now sit behind the high windows of the Presidential Residence. Under the banner of "Peace and National Reconstruction," Wang Jingwei has steered the Republic of China into an age of constitutional rule: the National Assembly has been convened, the five Yuan are in operation, legislation stand complete, and the central apparatus of state has swollen to an unprecedented scale. On the surface, apart from Manchuria, China has once more achieved unification.

And yet, this unification bears a closer resemblance to a color on a map. The political stage of Nanjing is awash in wine and spectacle; factional strife grinds on without end. The Neo-CC Faction, the Reorganization Clique, the Mansion Clique—each hurls ceaseless volleys at the others. Politicians speak piously of ideals, but what their hearts truly reckon upon are power and budgets. The great machinery of government churns day and night, and yet, it has lost any true sense of direction.

Step beyond Nanjing, and another China still endures. In the mountain fastnesses of the Southwest, warlords, native chieftains, and local strongmen weave a dense web; orders from the center seldom travel further than the provincial capitals. Beyond the yellow sands of the Northwest, the land remains the private domain of the Ma clan. The Blue Sky White Sun flag flies high over the borderlands, but matters of taxation, troops, life and death—these still rest in the hands of local powerholders. The so-called "Great Unification" is no more than a thin coat of lacquer.

The war has ended, yet the questions have only begun to surface: the center against the provinces; the Constitution against reality; capital against the countryside; peace against humiliation. These contradictions coil as hidden currents beneath the foundations of the new state. Nanjing still raises its wine cups in celebration, but more and more are coming to understand that such calm cannot last forever.

At the same moment, the Rising Sun of the Far Eastern Empire has climbed to its zenith. From Attu Island to Singapore, from Vladivostok to Calcutta, Japan bestrides two oceans and commands a billion souls beneath the Co-Prosperity Sphere, supplanting the old colonial order as a superpower. Yet beneath the brilliance, the military apparatus grows bloated, the zaibatsu have stiffened into rigidity, land reform lies stalled, and the wealth of the continent is bled away by inefficient rule and resistance movements. The gears that drive the empire have already begun to rust.

Southeast Asia, too, stirs with hidden currents. Though its nations achieved independence one after another in the wake of the "March 9th Coup," the Japanese warships moored in their harbors, the garrisons stationed beside their railways, and the economic lifelines held fast in foreign hands all remain a reminder : the old order has not truly come to an end. Pan-Thaism surges day by day. Whether it shall bring submission or defiance, no one can yet say.

Across times, in which the Shōwa era, the Kangde era, and the Republican era have intertwined, the Co-Prosperity Sphere has long since ceased to be a wartime conception. Railways and ports, banks and factories—these have stitched Tokyo, Nanjing, Xinjing and Bangkok into a single fabric. And yet, for all its prosperity, the question remains unanswered: where is this vast edifice headed?
