War Does Not Have a Human Face

A Hearts of Iron IV mod about living through history as an ordinary civilian.

Instead of controlling a nation, you live the life of a single person while the AI handles politics, diplomacy, production, and war.

You may study, work, fall in love, marry, raise a family, be drafted into military service, survive air raids, lose people close to you, or simply try to make it through the war alive.

This is not a mod about commanding armies.

It is about the people who had to live while armies were fighting.

How to Start

• Start a new game and choose the country where you want your character to live.

• After the game begins, the character creation sequence will start.

• Choose your character's gender, name, background, and portrait.

• Once character creation is complete, national management is handed over to the AI.

• Use the Civilian Life interface in the upper-right corner of the screen to manage your character's life.

From there, time will pass normally alongside the historical or alternate course of the Hearts of Iron IV world.

Civilian Life

Your character has their own:

• Age and health

• Stress

• Money, income, and household expenses

• Education and employment

• Residence

• Relationships and marriage

• Children and family

• Military service

• Injuries and illness

• Wartime experiences

The world around your character is still the normal Hearts of Iron IV world.

Wars begin, borders move, cities are bombed, governments collapse, and your civilian may be caught in the middle of events they cannot control.

War and Military Service

Depending on age, gender, country, war conditions, and other circumstances, your character may be affected by:

• Conscription

• Army, navy, or air force service

• Military nursing

• Transfers between military postings

• Combat and frontline danger

• Letters from a deployed spouse

• Wounds and permanent injuries

• Demobilization

• Death in military service

Not everyone becomes a soldier.

For many characters, war is experienced from home — through shortages, separation, air raids, evacuation, and bad news arriving by letter.

Family and Relationships

Characters can meet partners, marry, have children, and build a household.

Family members may also be affected by war.

A spouse can be drafted, children may need to be evacuated, and not everyone who leaves home will return.

If your character dies, their story does not necessarily have to end there.

In some circumstances, another member of the family can carry the story forward.

Life Record

The mod keeps a chronological Life Record of major events in your character's life.

It can record events such as:

• Education and graduation

• Employment

• Marriage

• Births and deaths in the family

• Military service

• Transfers and wartime experiences

• Injuries

• Evacuation and displacement

• Important encounters

• Major turning points in your character's life

Over time, the Life Record becomes a personal history of one individual living inside the much larger history of the war.

A world war may appear on the map as arrows, fronts, and divisions.

For your character, the same war may be remembered as a marriage, a letter, a destroyed home, a missing relative, or a night spent in an air-raid shelter.

Special Lives

Most characters will live ordinary civilian lives.

However, certain combinations of identity, education, nationality, timing, and historical circumstances may open unusual paths.

For example:

Try beginning in Germany as a female student named "Traudl".

What happens after graduation may depend on the world around her.

Some lives remain far from the people who make history.

Others may unexpectedly find themselves very close to them.

Portraits

The mod currently includes:

• 16 cultural portrait groups

• 8 male portraits per group

• 8 female portraits per group

• 256 civilian portraits in total

This is still an Alpha release.

Large systems are already playable, but bugs, balance changes, and additional events should still be expected.

Starting a new game is recommended when testing major new versions.
