In the days of the Old Republic the color of your blade signified your role in the Jedi Order. Purple blades symbolised their users' connection to both sides of the force. As a literal combination of the blue and red blades. The user, like their lightsaber, contains both the light and dark sides of the force. In the Jedi order, purple blades signified someone who had at one point embraced the dark side of the force, but returned to the light. The blade color reminds them of their past.
