1968 Dodge Dart Hemi LO23 Super Stock factory race car. In 1968 Mopar decided to make a limited amount of their A-body Dodge and Plymouth compacts strictly for drag racing competition. The cars were shipped directly off the assembly line to Hurst Performance without drivelines or interiors, and lacking such elements as sound deadeners, seam sealer, windshield wipers, door window regulators, rear seats, carpet and padding, headliners, etc etc. At Hurst, fiberglass front fenders, hood, and bumpers were added, the doors were dipped in acid to lighten them, and special thin, lightweight glass was installed. Seats from a Dodge A100 van were added to provide a rudimentary interior. Hurst then installed a new 426ci Hemi with magnesium cross-ram intake, and either a beefed A833 four-speed, or heavy-duty TorqueFlite automatic. The 4-speed cars got a Dana 60 rear axle, while the automatics got a special Chrysler 8.75" rear. Once Hurst finished their modifications, racers were able to acquire their cars. They were delivered in grey primer, with the fiberglass front end parts still in unpainted black gel-coat, and with basic black steel wheels. Most of these went on to glorious racing careers lasting for many years, but a few probably found their calling late at night on the streets.
