ГАЗ-21С Волга 3 серия / GAZ-21S Wołga 3 Seria / GAZ-21S Volga 3 series

Construction for replacement of outdated GAZ-20 Pobeda (rus. for Victory) began in 1951. New Volga was released in 1956 and despite having same wheelbase as older model, it was in fact bigger and more comfortable car. Till 1970, when production ceased, 639 478 Volgas were made (including GAZ-22 Universal and GAZ-23 catch-up KGB car). Car was facelifted twice - first time in 1958, then in 1962. This is 3rd series model, the final version of first Volga. Grille with big slots were replaced by a more subtle, grille with lots of narrow slots, giving this car a nickname of "whale", as it somehow reassembled whale's teeth. Other changes included new bumpers, indicators, tail lights and small details like emblems or removal of deer figurine on bonnet - authorities decided it's bit unsafe that pedestrians hit by a Volga were impaled on it. Every Volga (excluding GAZ-23) was equipped with 2,4 inline-4 petrol engine, connected to 3-speed manual transmission, or rarely 3-speed automatic (that was proven to be unreliable and difficult to service, as only 3 cities in whole USSR could service them properly).
