My take on the Avro Vulcan B.2 bomber. This high-altitude version has a payload of 1 x Blue Steel thermonuclear standoff guided missile. The plane is painted in Anti-flash White, a white colour used on nuclear bombers to reflect some of the thermal radiation from a nuclear explosion, protecting the aircraft and its occupants. (It's actually a very pale blue since pure white looks far to bright and luminescent in the game IMO.)
Info from Wikipedia.
The Avro Vulcan (Hawker Siddeley Vulcan from July 1963) is a jet-powered, tailless, delta-wing, high-altitude, strategic bomber, which was operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) from 1956 until 1984.
As a part of the V-force, the Vulcan was the backbone of the United Kingdom's airborne nuclear deterrent during much of the Cold War. Although the Vulcan was typically armed with nuclear weapons, it could also carry out conventional bombing missions, which it did in Operation Black Buck during the Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina in 1982.
The Vulcan had no defensive weaponry, initially relying upon high-speed, high-altitude flight to evade interception. Electronic countermeasures were employed by the B.1 (designated B.1A) and B.2 from around 1960. A change to low-level tactics was made in the mid-1960s.
Both the pilot and the co-pilot can launch and control the Blue Steel missile, so it works both in SP and MP games.
CONTROLS MAIN/PILOT'S SEAT Alt controls to fly. W/S: Variable throttle. S: Ground brakes. A/D: Ground steering/Yaw. Up/Down arrows / Mouse: Pitch. Left/Right arrows / Mouse: Roll. X / Disable steering: Landing gear. K/ Hazard Lights: Air Brakes. B / Beacon: Landing lights. (Hold X /Invert Steering: Bomb bay doors.) Disabled in this version!
NON-ALT CONTROLS FOR MISSILE Fire action 1 / Num 1: Launch Blue Steel missile. A/D: Yaw (works very badly as it mainly rolls the missile the wrong way). Up/Down arrows / Mouse: Pitch. Left/Right arrows / Mouse: Roll. Camera 1: Missile onboard camera/sight.
CO-PILOT'S SEAT NON-ALT CONTROLS FOR MISSILE Fire action 1 / Num 1: Launch Blue Steel missile. A/D: Yaw (works very badly as it mainly rolls the missile the wrong way). Up/Down arrows / Mouse: Pitch. Left/Right arrows / Mouse: Roll. Camera 1: Missile onboard camera/sight.
NOTES ON BLUE STEEL MISSILE
- The blue Steel missile will rotate slightly when released as the fins are folded out; this will be countered by small thrusters so I recommend not trying to correct or counter this initial rotation manually.
- The Blue Steel was actually guided by an inertial navigation system, i.e. a fire-and-forget missile, but I have no clue how to build a sensor guidance system and I definitely don't have the energy to learn how to build one so I made it manually controlled as per above.
GENERAL NOTES
- Since the rear landing gears clip through a lot of pieces (sorry but I could not be bothered to rebuild the whole wing once I got it done, it would also add even more bricks) and has moving parts so sometimes the plane will veer off to one side a little because of this. SOmething that seems to help is to apply the handbrake before retracting the gear since this prevents the wheels from spinning inside the wing, and if that doesn't help lower the gear a little and retract them again.
- Don't forget to release the handbrake before landing!!! -The lack of any real lift from the fluid dynamics pieces under 300 kph makes a heavy plane like this hard to control at low speeds, so try to keep the speed over 400 kph, especially with the bomb load still onboard. -It has been extremely tricky to trim this plane properly since it moves really fast (real top speed 1,040kph which is more or less the in-game top speed too) and it carries a big bomb load that alters weight and weight and distribution and the bombs also have some aero pieces. I've done my best to trim it both at lower and higher speeds, with and without bombs, but especially at higher speeds the plane needs quite a bit of input to fly straight, just FYI.
