The Panzer III was a German medium tank that served as a mainstay of the Wehrmacht's armored forces during the early years of World War II. It was originally designed as a tank capable of engaging and defeating enemy armor, complementing the infantry-support role of the Panzer IV. Development: Designed in the mid-1930s, the Panzer III was intended to carry a 37mm anti-tank gun (KwK 36), but it was later upgraded to a 50mm KwK 38 gun as German forces encountered better-armored enemy tanks like the Soviet T-34. Its design featured a fully rotating turret and thicker armor than earlier German tanks, giving it an edge in maneuverability and firepower at the onset of the war. The Panzer III M featured thicker frontal armor, up to 70 mm, to improve survivability against enemy anti-tank weapons. It also featured skirts on the sides to protect against shaped charge munitions.
