The T-73EX Echelon is an experimental tank of the 4th generation, created on the basis of the T-73A (object 173-3) under the modernization program of the PMTP "Echelon 152". The base of the Rubezh has been significantly changed, improvements include strengthening the transmission and chassis units, installing composite armor blocks on the sides of hull, installing a new exhaust system that reduces visibility in the infrared spectrum, strengthening structural strength, improving crew comfort and additional protection from secondary fragments. The tower was completely replaced with a semi-habitable one. The new turret had many design advantages, such as the low silhouette of the "cheeks", firing panels of the ammunition, isolated from the crew gun space and mechanized laying. The tank also received an upgraded 3A74-152 cannon, and, unlike the Rubezh, it has a heat shield and an enlarged breech, which allows it to load high-power 3BP63 Ultimat projectiles. According to the decision of the management, the tank was forbidden to be exported.

History

The first prototype of the Echelon, Object 273-1, was built in 1998. After the start of the Dagestan company, it was decided to continue testing in the combat zone, and after that T-73EX was sent to the Chechen Republic and was widely used in the storming of the city of Grozny. The tank has shown its excellent protection and tremendous firepower, which allows you to destroy the tanks of a potential enemy in silhouette. After the end of the second Chechen war, the tank was produced in small batches, the total number of vehicles produced at the time of 2023 is 71 units (open sources).
