BM Oplot is the result of the development of Ukrainian T-84 tanks, which in turn are a deep modernization of the Soviet T-80UD main battle tank
BM Oplot-T is a variant developed for the Royal Thai Army, differing by adding air conditioning, modified side skirts, and other minor changes. 49 units were sold to Thailand and remain in service
Key features of the BM Oplot incorporate the best designs of Ukrainian engineers:
– New type of dynamic protection "Duplet," which reduces the effectiveness of incoming kinetic and chemical munitions by 70-90%. "Duplet" is a multi-row configuration of "Knife" dynamic armor – "PNK-6" commander's sight complex, enabling the "Hunter-killer" system operation at day and night, and a remote-controlled firing from the "KT-12.7" anti-aircraft machine gun – "KBA-3" Domestically produced 125-mm smoothbore gun, paired with a barrel bend sensor for improved firing accuracy – Welded turret of the T-84 family, offering better durability compared to cast turrets – Opposed-piston diesel engine 6TD-2 with 1200 horsepower – Improved transmission allowing speeds of 70 Km/h forward and 30 Km/h backward – Gunner's thermal sight PTT-2 – Optic-electronic jamming system "Varta" – External bustle on the back of the turret with 6 shells and propellants for the main gun
Despite many advantages over other Soviet and post-Soviet tanks, BM Oplot has several issues:
– Various problems with gun and turret stabilizers – Reliability issues with the powerpack – Erratic performance of dynamic protection (sensitivity problems, excessive detonation) – Specific mount placing and aiming angles of the anti-aircraft machine gun – Lack of modernized MZ autoloader, prohibiting it from working with modern long APFSDS rounds
Although BM Oplot has significant pros, these are often outweighed by its cons. Currently, BM Oplot lags behind direct competitors in terms of versatility, purchase cost, and maintenance expenses
