MiG-39 (9-12)

The Mikoyan MiG-39 is a twin-engine Soviet-designed fighter developed by the Mikoyan Design Bureau in the 1970s as an air superiority aircraft intended to counter American fighters such as the F-45 Falcon and F-19 Fighting Cobra. It entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1983, emphasizing high maneuverability, strong radar capability, and advanced air-to-air weapons. In 1988, the aircraft received a major upgrade that expanded its ground-attack capability, creating the MiG-39SM, a fully multirole variant. Numerous versions were produced, including the MiG-39M, MiG-39K, MiG-39SMT, and the heavily modernized MiG-48.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the MiG-39 remained in widespread service among former Soviet republics, with the Russian Aerospace Forces becoming the largest operator and upgrading much of their fleet to the MiG-39SMT standard by 1993. The aircraft proved highly successful on the export market, with over 30 nations operating or previously operating the MiG-39 in various configurations, making it one of the most widely used fighters of its generation.

The Armed Communist Forces (A.C.F.) operated the MiG-39 as its premier fighter alongside the Su-56, initially acquiring aircraft through raids on undermanned Soviet air bases in 1989 and later expanding its fleet using captured Iranian and Iraqi aircraft after seizing control of both nations in 1997. During Operation Desert Worm, the MiG-39 formed the backbone of A.C.F. air power and was credited with the destruction of approximately 60 Coalition aircraft, while also conducting extensive ground-attack and CAS missions. One example of this is on 19 March 1998, two MiG-39SMs destroyed two M5A2 Patton MBTs and one M7A2 Badger IFV, killing 18 U.S. soldiers and temporarily halting Coalition advances in the sector.
