T-90 (Object 188) is an upgraded version of the T-72B tank. The goal of the modernization was to increase the vehicle's firepower, extend its combat range, enhance its survivability, and improve the crew's situational awareness.

These improvements were achieved by installing: – new commander's station, equipped with the PNK-4S stabilized sight and an enclosed machine gun; – 1G46 day sight-rangefinder and the TPN-4 night sight for the gunner; – DVE-BS wind sensor; – additional sections of anti-neutron lining on the upper front hull plate; – "Shtora-1" electro-optical countermeasures system.

T-90K obr. 1994 is the command version of the T-90. It differs from the production model by: – additional communication equipment and improved navigation systems; – TO1-PO2T "Agava-2" thermal sight instead of the TPN-4; – the absence of mounting points (brackets) for optional equipment (such as a mine plow); – the AB-1-P28 auxiliary power unit; – reduced main gun ammunition load of 34 rounds.

The "Shtora-1" electro-optical active protection system is designed to enhance tank survivability by installing OTShU-1-7 IR dazzlers, TShU-1-1 and TShU-1-11 laser warning sensors (precision and coarse detection heads), and new aerosol munitions (3D17) for the smoke grenade launchers. The system automatically detects the direction of laser irradiation, sends the necessary signals to the control panel, rotates the turret towards the threat, provides IR-jamming, and automatically launches aerosol grenades.

The T-90 tank represents the pinnacle of T-72 modernization at the end of the USSR's existence. However, the economic collapse of the new country in the 1990s prevented the tank from being mass-produced and widely adopted, limiting it to small-scale production. Nevertheless, the T-90 laid the foundation for a new chapter in the history of Russian tank building, leading to the T-90S/T-90A modifications and subsequently the T-90M.
