** History: ** At the start of WW2 the Swedish air force was still equipped with the mostly obsolete Gloster gladiators. Importing foreign aircraft was not an option due to extreme prices, transit times,... SAAB couldn't help with this either as they were already producing SAAB 17 and 18 bombers at maximum capacity. To bypass this problem, a new company and factory were setup (Royal Air Administration Factory in Stockholm, FFVS) to build the J-22 fighter.

The first prototype J-22 made its maiden flight on 20 September 1942 from Bromma airport, however official production of the aircraft had already started before the protoypes took flight. In total roughly 198 aircraft were built and delivered with the last delivery happening on April 6 1946.

The J 22 was well-liked by its pilots and possessed good manoeuvrability and responsive controls. Forward visibility on the ground left something to be desired due to the nature of its taildragger design making taxiing difficult. In total 2 official variants of the aircraft were used, the J-22 A and J-22 B, with the main difference being an upgrade in weaponry.

With a top speed of 575 km/h the Swedish press called the fighter the "world's fastest in relation to the engine power". (While this was not absolutely accurate, the J 22 was in the same class as the early marks of the Spitfire and A6M ZERO. J-22 pilots modified this to "the world's fastest in relation to track width", because of the very narrow spacing of the undercarriage. In mock dogfights with P-51 Mustangs (called J 26 in Swedish service) it was able to "hold its own".

** INFO: ** The J-22 is a relatively manoeuvrable fighter with a decent top speed of 575 kph. Due to its slightly lacking engine this fighter has some issues maintaining speed in a climb so pilots are advised to keep the fights horizontal and to go into a fight with altitude advantage.

With the later version (J-22 B) having 4x 13.2mm Akan mg's its firepower is enough to engage most fighters and small bombers. Although it may struggle at getting to and shooting down heavy bombers.

The earlier version (J-22 A) had 2x 13.2mm Akans and 2x 8mm Ksp mg's, overall this version of the fighter was a bit faster but the difference is negligible making the B variant a straight upgrade.
