The development of the Porsche Carrera GT dates back to its predecessors, the Porsche 911 GT1 and the LMP1-98 racing cars. Partly due to a change in FIO and ACO regulations in 1998, production of these cars was halted. However, around this time (1999), Porsche planned to build a new Le Mans prototype. Originally, the car was to be equipped with a flat-6 turbo engine, but it was redesigned to accommodate a V10 engine. This ensured that the car could be entered in races starting in 2000. The V10 engine was a secretly built Porsche engine for the Footwork Formula 1 team in 1992. Nevertheless, this engine was reused, with the displacement increased to 5.5 liters. However, the project was cancelled in mid-1999 after barely two days of testing. The reason was reportedly that Porsche, under the influence of Audi and Volkswagen, wanted to build the new Cayenne and needed all its engineers for this new SUV. It is also speculated that VW-Audi boss Ferdinand Piëch did not want competition from Porsche for the Audi R8, Audi's Le Mans prototype in 2000.
