Seriously, how does it work?

This is effectively just an auto-injector headset with modified tags to allow for the insertion of explosives and only explosives. When a character wearing a loaded headset drops below 50% health, the explosive will detonate. Be warned, however, that it shares the same sprite as the auto-injector and may be hard to discern whether a character has one at a glance.

What kind of explosives work?

Anything that works in a detonator. Some are not recommended though, due to the range of their explosion. C4 in particular should be considered a WMD. Personally, I recommend compound N, Grenades and Dirty Bomb's for personal defence, as their impact is relatively limited outside of your immediate area.
