Devlog #9: Special Gear — Public Testing Sign-Ups Open!
WELCOME, OFFICERS!
First, some important news — we've added a public testing sign-up button to our Steam page. We'll announce the date later, but in the meantime, don't forget to sign up!
In Police Stories 2, equipment plays an important role in every operation. Different gear allows you to handle situations in different ways, and some tools can completely change your approach to an assault.
Today, we'd like to tell you about several new features: the MGL rotary grenade launcher, the Taser, body armor and helmets, as well as reinforced doors.
MGL
The MGL is a rotary grenade launcher that allows you to use different types of special ammunition.
The first type is tear gas grenades. When an enemy is inside a tear gas cloud, they lose the ability to move and shoot, and surrender after a short while. If they stay in the cloud for too long, they may even lose consciousness.
For the player and their teammate, tear gas blocks all actions (such as taking out gadgets, opening doors, etc.) and creates visual distortion on the screen. To protect themselves from the gas, officers can use a gas mask. It occupies a separate equipment slot, but can be extremely useful.
That's because levels can now contain rooms with gas leaks.
These rooms spawn randomly throughout a level and also prevent players from passing through them. We're experimenting with the idea of having these rooms deal a small amount of damage, but this hasn't been decided yet.
But let's get back to the MGL. The second type of ammunition is flashbang grenades. They work exactly like regular flashbangs, so there's not much else to add about them.
Have ideas for other types of MGL rounds? Let us know in the comments or on our Discord!
Taser
Another new non-lethal gadget is the Taser.
It has a limited range, so it's important to consider the distance to your target before using it.
A Taser hit immobilizes an enemy and causes them to lose consciousness. However, to knock an enemy out, you need to maintain the electric current for long enough. It only takes a couple of seconds, but that's still something to keep in mind during a firefight.
The Taser also comes in handy when a target must not be killed. Some targets assigned by the mafia or the mayor must be neutralized without killing them, and that's where the Taser becomes a useful tool.
Keep in mind that arresting a target yields the highest reward. Neutralizing enemies with gas, the Taser, or rubber bullets doesn't incur a penalty, but earns you less money.
Body Armor and Helmets
In Police Stories 2, there are three levels of body armor.
Each armor level has its own price, and the armor looks different in-game. This means you can immediately identify an officer's or enemy's equipment level just by looking at them.
The Level 3 body armor comes with a helmet. It protects the head from damage and is the only way to survive a headshot from any firearm.
One small detail: when the helmet is hit, it flies off the wearer's head and stops providing protection.
Reinforced Doors
Not every door can simply be kicked down.
Levels now feature reinforced doors that cannot be opened this way. By default, they're always locked, and there are only two ways to open them: a multitool or explosives.
Additionally, some doors may have tripwires behind them, so it's worth assessing the situation carefully before opening a room. This makes the borescope more valuable and gives you another reason not to rush blindly through every door.
Now even a door can become part of your strategy: sometimes it's better to take the time to bypass a lock, while other situations call for a louder, faster approach.
Stay tuned for more news, officers!
